Presidents Message

Dear Members of the IMPA,

I thank you for placing your confidence in me once again and appointing me as the President of this association at the AGM held on Sunday the 12th of December 2021.

I sincerely hope that I will be able to carry out my duties of leading the association and taking it to the helm.

Though we are restricted by the Covid pandemic i hope to continue with the monthly  CPD programmes which are looked forward to  by the members and hold the council meetings as scheduled every month.

I also take this opportunity to welcome all the new office bearers and council members and look forward to their support for a very interactive year with full participation at all the programmes of the IMPA.

We will  have the monthly news letter , annual journal and if possible the updated version of the IMPA directory  published on schedule.

The IMPA will cooperate with other stakeholders and take an active role in matters of mutual interest.

The new  state of the art updated website which was designed under the guidance  of immediate Past President Dr Ananda Perera also includes the Sri Lanka drug index and could be accessed by anyone free of charge. Any new product registered at the NMRA will be uploaded immediately to the drug index.

I implore the members to vigourously campaign to get eligible medical practitioners to join the association so that all matters relating to them could be collectively addressed.

I also Thank the ministry of health  for the generous grant of Rs 500,000/= and all other sponsors for their support to the IMPA.

I request the members to bring up  any other relevent matters  that need to be addressed to the council so they could be resolved.

Dr. A. H. A. Hazari

President Message 2021

Dear All,

Having shouldered the responsibilities of the IMPA for last 10 months I think I should recap and reflect on the following matters for the benefit of our membership and the association in general.

I think it is hightime we need to make an active attempt to change the mental stereotypes regarding the IMPA as an organization.  This can be achieved by several means :

  1. Special interest groups SIGs – mental health, diabetes, respiratory disorders,  primary care and private medical care in sri lanka
  2. Membership drive and foreign medical graduates
  3. Research output
  4. Relationship with Ministry of Health (MOH)

Creation of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) is a widespread activity in many medical organizations. The rationale probably is to create an environment for team work and to let wide and varied competencies and skills of individual members to be expressed in organizational activity and performance. For a start

I would like to propose diabetes, respiratory diseases, mental health as some important topics around which we can formulate some important activities. All these should have their outcome formulated in terms of patient centered themes.  This will ensure that we will honor the mandate of our constitution by :

  1. Organizing ourselves for the purpose of rendering humanitarian service and service to the professionb. Maintaining professional and ethical standards of the medical profession, particularly relating to the science of medicine, surgery and medical clinical research. And also it cannot be overemphasized the importance of research more so in the field of primary care in Sri Lanka which will be served by these SIGs.We are also in an overdrive mode for our membership recruitment program.  We are actively canvassing private sector hospitals, nursing homes and clinics to refer their medical officers to our office for further action.  I think in this regard we should actively think of designing and maintaining a website for this purpose and also for our CPD activities. Because in our membership drive a common request is for promotional  materials.  I think in this regard too this website would be of immense help. I would also like to solicit the help of our members to find an give us a sponsor for our proposed website which would serve us to carry our programs uninterrupted.

IMPA must be in the forefront of the research in primary care in Sri Lanka for the simple reason there are only a very few academic organizations to carry out this important activity for the benefit of the doctors and patients alike. And none of these organizations are known to produce any research output on a consistent and regular basis. I personally feel this is an important area the IMPA should focus on and a another Newsletter president’s message will focus on this.  In addition our constitution has given us a mandate to go ahead with research activity for the benefit of society in general and also to our members. Finally  in our membership we have come across the phenomenon of foreign medical graduates and particularly the undergraduate. In fact currently most of the foreign medical graduates are absorbed into the private health care services in Sri Lanka. Therefore it is obvious that there is a pool of potential membership for us there for grabs.

President Message 2019

Dear All,

It is the Christmas season.  Our AGM and the CPD program will be followed by a Christmas carol singing and a special program of sharing our season’s joy with a group of deprived children from Wanathamulla. Many of our members supported the cause and the Santa is going to make the Christmas for these children a joy and a surprise.

Coming to the affairs of the IMPA it has been a fruitful year for the IMPA. We have continued our

usual CPD activities as our the schedules in the past years.  In addition we have got ourselves involved in a project of national importance.  That is the publishing of the SLDI2020 or Sri Lanka Drug Index 2020. This is an update for the existing SLDI2010 which was long overdue. We are happy to announce the expected financial support of the NMRA for the project and also to continue the project.  We also have planned for a primary care formulary for the primary care physicians of Sri Lanka.

Also with I gratitude I should mention the annual grant of 500,000 Rs we received form the Ministry of Health for the year 2019. And also continued attempts are made by our senior members including Drs Joe, Sanath and Lucian to get the approval for this annual grant on a regular basis so that out financial position would be on par with other colleges and medical organizations. I offer my heartfelt thanks for all those who are supporting the IMPA in this regard. Finally I would be failing in my duty if I do not give my due thanks to Ms. Champa and Dr Hazari for the uninterrupted support extended to me throughout this year.Wishing You All a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year 2020.
